Understanding How Stress Impacts Bulimia

As someone who has experienced bulimia for 15 years and now works as a therapist specialising in eating disorders, I understand firsthand how overwhelming stress can fuel disordered eating behaviors. Stress often becomes a trigger for those struggling with bulimia, and recent research provides fascinating insights into why this happens.

When faced with stress, the brain of someone with bulimia responds differently to food cues. Studies have shown that regions of the brain responsible for self-perception and memory, like the precuneus, show decreased activity when viewing food after a stressful event. This suggests that food might serve as a way to escape difficult thoughts or feelings. This reaction can perpetuate the binge-purge cycle, where food is used not just for sustenance but as a coping mechanism to numb or distract from emotional pain.

This aligns with my own experience. During my bulimia journey, food became both a comfort and a punishment. It was my way of managing anxiety when I lacked healthier tools. For many, the behavior feels like the only way to regain control in moments of chaos, even though it ultimately causes more harm.

Recovery begins with understanding these patterns and developing healthier ways to manage stress. You’re not broken—your brain may simply be responding to stress in a way it’s learned over time. With the right support and tools, it’s absolutely possible to break free and heal.
